A former British Special Air Service operator who voluntarily entered the DusitD2 Hotel complex during the 2019 terrorist attack in Nairobi is once again drawing global attention after his remarkable actions resurfaced across social media.
The soldier, later identified as Christian Craighead, was in Kenya on a training assignment when heavily armed Al Shabaab militants launched a deadly assault on the luxury hotel and office complex in Nairobi’s Westlands district on January 15, 2019. Instead of remaining on the sidelines, Craighead armed himself with his personal equipment and entered the complex to help rescue civilians trapped inside.
Witnesses and security footage showed Craighead repeatedly escorting terrified civilians to safety while moving back into the building as gunfire continued. He worked alongside Kenyan security forces and other responders during the operation, helping evacuate hostages and confronting the attackers during the nearly 20 hour siege. The attack ultimately claimed the lives of 21 civilians, one Kenyan security officer, and all five attackers.
Craighead’s extraordinary courage earned him the nickname “Obi Wan Nairobi,” a tribute that quickly spread across military circles and social media. His actions have since been widely praised by security experts and world leaders, with many describing him as one of the defining heroes of the attack.
The former SAS operator later received the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, one of the United Kingdom’s highest military honors for bravery, recognizing his actions during the Nairobi siege. His story has also inspired books, documentaries, and even influenced character design in popular military video games.
Years after the attack, Craighead continues to be celebrated as an example of courage under extreme pressure. His decision to risk his own life while off duty remains one of the most remarkable acts of heroism during a modern terrorist attack.
